The Artist
Joana Choumali was born in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. After attending school, she went to Casablanca, Morocco, to study Graphic Art & Design. Joana worked in advertising before embarking in the world of the visual arts. Questioning her identity as an African, the resulting works documented young professional African women, struggling to stay connected to family traditional cultures. “We all live the same way, whatever the country, the continent, the culture. We all walk in the same way for the same purpose, in search of well-being, or a better life.By embroidering my photos, I just look for a dream world. I hatch, I erase, I redesign my vision of a dream world.” www.joanachoumali.com
