KANSIIME BRIAN LISTER TIMELESS ECHOES

The Exhibition

The images of Kansiime Brian Lister in this exhibition are mainly from the ‘Timeless’ series. In this body of works, we are able to see the connections of the past to the present, represented through female bodies in realistic portraiture. The artist fuse elements of the old classical style of painting, to offer us a narrative, that is generally missing from history. During the victorian era, the ideas of beauty and elegance were shaped by concepts of superiority and colonisation. Black women were generally excluded from this narrative. In this exhibition, the paintings of Kansiime, place Black women of African origin centre stage, and are viewed as graceful, elegant, beautiful and strong.
