The Exhibition

The title ‘Do You Know Who I Am?’ is a common phrase in Nigeria. Among other people the artist met on his travels, many of the small images depicts people Awofeso met during a return flight to Birmingham from Lagos in 2021. The figures are all made free-form from reclaimed wooden materials. They are then painted with bright colours, and could be read as La Sape – a subculture of style in the Congo. The figures occupy an imaginary space.

The Artist

Abdulrazaq Awofeso is an artist working in the discipline and fusion of sculpture and painting. One of his big influence is Tadashi Kawamata, the Japanese artist who is known for large sculptural installations, made from discarded wooden materials. The works in this exhibition are made from wooden pallets and crates. Awofeso currently lives and works between Lagos, Nigeria and Birmingham, UK.
